Makena’s Newborn Shoot: When Things Don’t Go As Planned

Here’s how a newborn shoot is supposed to go:

About 20 minutes after a full bottle, the baby will be fast asleep, which will allow the photographer to be able to move and manipulate the baby in a myriad of ways and in several outfits (or lack thereof). About two hours later, with plenty of images taken, the baby will be begin to wake up, just in time for another bottle.

That’s not exactly how Miss Makena’s shoot went.

Not that it was anyone’s fault, including her. The baby girl of our friends Ron and Michelle (who we told you about yesterday), Makena has had stomach and acid reflux problems since pretty much the day she was born. In fact, it was so bad that we had to delay the shoot well past the 10-day-to-two-weeks-since birth timeframe, simply because she couldn’t handle it. Bless her heart, she’s had a rough time.

So, we finally picked a night just before Christmas and decided to give it a shot. At the start, it looked like it might turn out good. Makena had had a good day that day and looked as if she was pretty tired. So we cranked out the heat in Ron and Michelle’s house (another sleep inducer), let her get asleep and started the session.

She woke up almost immediately and stayed awake pretty much the whole time. We would snap the shutter as quickly as we could between screams. It was a challenge, but hopefully we got a got shots that will help Ron and Michelle remember the good parts of this time of Makena’s life.
