Caspian: Settling In

OK, so it’s been exactly a month since the new addition, Caspian, joined the family, so it’s probably time for an update about how things are going.

Wait a minute. Excuse me for a second while I do a little cleanup.

Unfortunately, there’s been a lot of that around here lately, as potty training has been a bit more difficult this time around. Our former dog, Lucy, caught on a lot quicker to proper rest room etiquette in the Pettis household, and by the time of her passing, she was pretty much accident free. Not so for Caspian. Let’s just say that he’s a typical male when it comes to cleanliness.

But we’re working on it and eventually we will get there. Otherwise, it’s hard to complain. He’s as loving and gentle of a dog as Lucy was. Can’t get enough belly rubs and head scratches, and has never met a stranger.

There are a few differences between them, though. Caspian is pretty good about riding in the car, where Lucy was a basket case. Lucy was the neighborhood watchdog, making sure that everyone and everything was going about their business properly. Caspian, not so much. He’d rather chase bugs. By the time Lucy was Caspian’s age now — about 10 weeks old — she had pretty much gotten out of her biting stage. Caspian would gnaw our fingers off if we would let him.

When we first got Caspian, I was a bit worried that it was too soon after Lucy’s death, and the adjustment would be difficult for all of us. And I’ll admit, there are times when something will trigger a memory of Lucy and the grief will return.

But Caspian has been good for all of us. He’s a great dog, and if we can teach him where his toilet is, it will be a lot better for him and us.

Just pray that he learns soon. More, of course, to come.

Emily’s Senior Model Shoot: And Now For Something Completely Different

Music to our ears.

We were meeting with the beautiful and talented Emily, discussing where she wanted to do the outdoor portion of her Senior Model Shoot. We suggested several places, from the standard Old City of Knoxville, to a farm where we have access to shoot, to downtown. Then we mentioned UT Gardens, and Emily immediately perked up.

And so did we.

We’ve shot at UT Gardens several times in the past, but only a couple of other times with seniors. Most seniors like something more eclectic or gritty. But Emily liked the idea of being to work in and around the greenery, flowers and props at the gardens.

And that wasn’t the only part of her shoot that was unique. One of Emily’s hobbies is art, so we set up her easel in the studio and shot with it. In fact, Emily is quite the student, having been selected to go to Governor’s School from Hardin Valley Academy.

Stunningly gorgeous, sweet as sugar and an academic powerhouse, Emily is the real deal. If you are an upcoming senior at Hardin Valley, you will want to seek out Emily to get a discount on your senior portrait session with Studio P.

In the meantime, here’s her Senior Model shoot. Enjoy.

2011 Trinity Hills Prom: Only as Old as You Feel

Every year, they amaze me.

They move slow. But they move.

Their joints hurt. But they don’t stop.

They may not feel so great. But they can’t stop smiling.

For the last four years, we have had the great honor of photographing the “Senior Prom” at Trinity Hills Assisted Living Center here in Knoxville. Part of the campus of our church, Chilhowee Hills Baptist, Trinity Hills is a state-of-the-art care facility that is home for dozens of “seasoned” citizens. Each spring, the staff throws a ‘prom” for the residents, complete with limo rides, a fabulous dinner, a DJ and, of course, dancing. Last year’s prom was a hoot and this year’s was even better.

Now, you might think that the residents, most of whom are way north of 70 years old, would have a pretty been-there-done-that attitude when it comes to something like a prom.

Think again. A lot of the residents at Trinity Hills are pretty rascally anyway, and something like a dance is just another excuse to have more fun. There were plenty of laughs and grins and the music played well past bedtime.

I can only hope that I have that kind of attitude when I reach their age.

Here are a few highlights from the night. Enjoy.

Victoria’s Senior Model Shoot: Style and Substance

All style, no substance.

That’s what we say when or someone is nothing but glitz and glamor and has no depth or personality to them.

So what if someone has both?

That’s certainly Victoria, who is one of our Senior Models from Carter High School. All you have to to do see the style is to take a look at her images. Clothes, hair, makeup — everything is just perfect. And bling? Well, as you can see, the girl likes her bling.

But there’s substance there as well. Victoria is as sweet as she is beautiful, and that smile is genuine. Whatever we wanted to try, she was willing to do.

She was an absolute joy to photograph and we had a lot of fun on her shoots. She wanted to do part of her outdoor shots in the Old City and part at a neighbor’s farm. We especially enjoyed shooting at the farm, where a late afternoon shower had not only cooled things off, but made for some really interesting skies.

So here’s Victoria’s Senior Model shots. Enjoy.

Update on Senior Model Search

Wow, can it be almost June already?

This year has really flown by. Today was the last day of school for Grant and most of the high schools around Knoxville have already graduated their classes for 2011. Summer is here!

So we thought it was time to give an update on our Senior Model search for this year. We’ve shared several of them with you already, and several more are coming in the following days and weeks. We’re very excited about this year’s group.

That being said, we are still looking for Senior Models for the 2011-2012 class from a few more schools in the area — specifically, Farragut, Christian Academy of Knoxville, Knoxville Catholic and Karns.

If you know anyone from any of these schools that you think would be interested in being a Senior Model for Studio P, have them fill out one of 0ur Senior Model applications, and if they fit our criteria, we will be in touch. This is a great opportunity for them to get their senior pictures done with us, and at the same time make some extra money for the summer and school year.

Don’t delay. We’re only going to keep taking applications for a limited time, so send them our way as quickly as possible!
