On the desk in my office is a picture of my son Grant, taken a day or so after he was born.

It’s one of those hospital photos of him wearing the outfit we took him home in, and every time I see it, I chuckle inside because it looks nothing like him now. In this picture, Grant has a head full of black hair, his complection is very dark and his eyes are huge and set wide on his face. Doesn’t even look like the same kid at all.

But I guess that’s true of all children. Everything about a child is fleeting, but especially how they look early in life. They change so much in those first few days, weeks and months and it can he hard to remember sometimes those chubby little fingers and belly buttons.

Those memories are important to our friend Lauren, so she has asked us to capture them of her sons Joel and Judah. In both instances, she wanted something simple — black and white against a black background that would preserve what each one looked like as a newborn — eyes and ears, hands and feet.

We shot little Judah back in December, and as always, we were awed yet again by the wonder of a child. God in his infinite power, creating one from two and doing it perfectly.

So here’s Judah, as he was. Enjoy.

So, high school senior-to-be, what if I told you that with a modest amount of effort on your part, that you could earn some extra spending money? Interested? Good.

OK, what if I told you that you could earn a LOT of extra spending money? Even more interested? Great!

And what if I told you that as part of this plan, you get to be treated like a rock-star model for a day? You’re probably hooked, now, right?

So what are we talking about? Well, it’s the 2012-1013 Studio P Senior Model Search, which we are kicking off this week.

Here’s how it works. We are looking for two current high school juniors (class of 2013) at every Knoxville area school to be Senior Models for the Studio P Senior Experience. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please fill out the on-line application and hit submit. We will review the applications and be back in touch with you and your parent(s) soon to discuss the program.

So what is a Studio P Senior Model? Well, basically they are our ambassadors at area high schools. They help us sell the Studio P Senior Experience to their friends and encourage them to use us as their Senior Portrait artists.

How would you do that? Well, here’s the fun part. If you are chosen to be a Studio P Senior Model from your school, you will receive a free Studio P Senior Experience, consisting of a studio and outdoor photo session of 1 to 1 and a half hours each. Your studio session will be at our studio facilities, but your outdoor session can be anywhere in Knox County — your choice, although we do have several suggestions of places where we have shot in the past. Or you can choose a special place that’s all you.

After your shoots, we’ll take two or three of your shots and create a business card-sized card (with a super cool design) with our information on the back to hand out to your friends. Your friends score because they get a discount on their Studio P Senior Experience session. We’ll also provide you with access to several of your shots for your Facebook page. Then for every friend who books a senior shoot with Studio P through your card or Facebook page, you will receive your choice of either studio credit toward the purchase of our senior portrait packages or cash. Yep, cold, hard cash. How much? Try $25 for every friend that signs with us. If five friends sign up, that’s $125. If it’s 10 friends, then it’s $250. Get a hundred and it’s $2,500. There’s also incentives as you reach different levels. So just think, you could either get your entire senior portrait package free (and we have some killer stuff besides pics to choose from) or you could pay for a new wardrobe. Or your senior trip. Or whatever you want.

So we would imagine that your next question is how do you get chosen to be a Studio P Senior Model? Well, first of all, you need to be photogenic and enjoy having your picture taken. A good sense of style doesn’t hurt, either. But just as important is an outgoing personality. This is essentially a part-time job in which the responsibilities include being photographed by our studio and then promoting us by showing your senior portraits to your friends, telling them about the studio, and encouraging them to choose Studio P for their senior portraits. Being an active part of social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter is a must, as you will be expected to help promote Studio P as much as possible (don’t worry, we’ll show you how).

We would love to be able to choose everyone, but as we said, we are limiting it to just two Models per school, so it’s a pretty elite group. But just know that if you get chosen to be a part of this, it’s going to be fun and exciting. So if you or someone you know at one of the schools above might be interested, don’t hesitate to submit an application. We expect the spots to fill up quick!

It doesn’t seem like it, but it’s been almost two years since we started the Studio P blog.

In that time, we’ve pretty much kept the same look for the site. Oh, we’ve tweaked things like fonts and colors, and we’ve changed pictures and backgrounds, but the overall look of the site is pretty much the way it was when we started.

Not anymore.

With the new year, it just seemed like the right time to give the blog a makeover, and we decided to do it from top to bottom. We think the color scheme, the new fonts and the way everything is laid out more fits the image that we want to portray for our business. Hopefully navigation is easier and everything is much less cluttered.

And the truth is, we’re not done. We’ve got more changes planned for the site that we will be rolling out soon. But for now, take a look at our new duds.

This time last year, it was a cold, rainy, soggy mess in Knoxville on New Year’s Day. This year? Bright sunlight is streaming through my office window and the temperature is a downright balmy 59 degrees.

So what does that mean for the year to come? Who knows?

What I do know is that we are very excited at Studio P about what we have planned and are planning for 2012. Last year was our best year yet and we can’t wait to build on it. So keep a watch out, because we will be rolling out a lot of new things in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, here’s a few more of our favorite shots from 2011. Enjoy.

It has been an amazing year at Studio P Photography.

We took our second trip to Israel in January. We stretched ourselves and our photography in directions that we would never have imagined. We’ve almost doubled the number of high school seniors that we did in 2010. We’ve done more portraits and been more creative in our locations and posing than we have ever been.

So on this last day of 2011, we thought we would take a look at some of our favorite moments from the year that have shared with you.

Enjoy.

One of the things we pride ourselves on at Studio P is making each and every Senior Experience that we do a fun time for the kids.

For the young ladies, that’s not usually a problem. We like to treat our senior shoots like a “modeling” experience, and what 17-year-old wouldn’t enjoy being treated like a model for an afternoon or a day?

But the guys are a different story. For a lot of them, a senior experience is as much or more for their mom as for themselves. For some, it’s entirely for their mom, and they are there under protest, at best.

That’s kind of how it was for Brady. He readily admitted when we started that his mom, Angie, was the main reason he was there, which made us a bit concerned. So we tried extra hard to keep his session, especially the time in the studio, as light and enjoyable as possible. Then when we hit the football field (Brady was the starting quarterback at Halls High School this year), he really seemed to open up.

We must have succeeded, because when it was over, he told us that it actually wasn’t that bad and he had had fun.

We took that as high praise. Hopefully, that came out in the images. Enjoy.

Ava was not having a good day.

No matter what we did, where we went, what we offered or how we pleaded, she was not having any of it. She was just not interested in having her picture taken.

All of us who are parents know that sometimes it’s just like that with 2-year-olds. There are times when they are willing to do whatever you ask. And then sometimes they cannot be persuaded for love or money.

Ava was definitely the latter on this day. So after 15 minutes of trying, we suggested to mom Leslie and dad Matt that we reschedule, which was not a problem for us. We would rather Ava be a willing participant than to push a situation that was unlikely to get better.

Turned out that was the right choice. A couple of weeks later, we met again and Ava, who was our runner-up in this past spring’s Cutest Kid Contest, was in a much better mood. She was happy, mom and dad were happy and we were able to capture some pretty cute moments.

A few of shots from the first session turned out, but the vast majority of them were from the makeup. And that’s just fine. Sometimes you just need a do-over.
